Get in touch with us nowThe presented timeline shows that the Italian production volume of olive oil reached 174 thousand tons in the crop year 2018/2019. This was a drastic drop compared to the previous year, when 429 thousand tons of oil were produced in Italy. The estimated production in the crop year 2023/2024 amounted to 289 thousand tons, a slight increase from the previous year. These types of fluctuating production figures are quite normal and are due to the fact that in alternate years, climatic factors and water availability contribute to production either positively or negatively.
Southern producers
In Italy, olive oil gets produced mainly in the southern regions of Apulia, Calabria and Sicily. In particular, Apulia reported the highest volume of pressed olives for olive oil. As of 2023, the production volume reached 201,800 tons in the region. Sicily and Calabria followed with 37,292 and 33,300 tons, respectively.
Quality olive oil
In Italy, Apulia heads the ranking of quality olive oil, too. Its extra virgin olive oil “Terra di Bari” was the largest PDO produced in the country, with 4,982 tons as of 2022. Also, the mentioned oil with PDO label (Protected Designation of Origin) reported the second highest production value at 24 million euros.
