Number of Nordstrom department stores in the U.S. in 2024, by state
As of January 2025, Nordstrom had 97 stores in the state of California. In total, the American luxury department store operated 386 outlets in that time period. The vast majority are domestic stores while 13 are located in Canada. The company has expanded its footprint by over a hundred stores since a decade ago, up from a total of 260 stores in 2013. But it has also seen store closures in the recent years, falling from its peak of 390 stores in 2019.
Nordstrom’s revenue and profit
Founded in 1901 in Seattle, Washington, Nordstrom has established its reputation as a department store offering a wide variety of designer clothing and footwear, cosmetics, and home goods. In 2022, the retail chain generated a net revenue of about 15.1 billion U.S. dollars and a gross profit of about 5.07 billion U.S. dollars. These values represent the second year of recovery since 2019. This comes after the retail slump brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which saw Nordstrom’s gross profit plummeting by almost 50 percent.
Department store landscape
In 2023, Nordstrom ranked sixth place in consumer satisfaction among selected department and discount stores in the United States. The retail chain scored similarly with its competitors Macy’s and Kohl’s, which also saw similar slump and recovery patterns due to the pandemic. Against this challenge and other headwinds including changing shopping preferences and growing competition from online retailers, the market size of department stores are nonetheless projected to sustain a growth trend over the next years. By 2026, the market is forecast to reach a size of 3.62 trillion U.S. dollars globally.
