The number of pet dogs registered in Sweden peaked in 2022. In the past years, the number grew from nearly 748 thousand pet dogs registered in 2011 to approximately 1.1 millions. As of 2021, the most purchased dog breed was the Labrador Retriever, known for its friendly, active and outgoing character. The Golden Retriever and the German Shephard came in second and third place.
Comparison to other Nordic countries
The Labrador Retriever was very popular in all Nordic countries. In Denmark, the breed ranked first, by the number of new registrations. In Norway, this breed came in fifth place among most popular breeds. The Border Collie had the highest number of registrations in this year.
Dog names in Sweden
In 2022, Molly was by far the most popular dog name as roughly nine thousand Swedish dogs bore it. Bella, another female dog name, ranked second. It was followed by the names Charlie and Doris.
