Number of professional eSports players in the Nordic countries 2000-2016

The statistic displays the number of professional eSports players per million inhabitants in selected Nordic countries from 2000 to 2016. Over the period of 16 years, the number of eSports professionals per million inhabitants grew from one to 49 in Denmark and from 2 to 54 in Sweden. In Finland, the corresponding number was 47 in 2016. Since the year 2010, Norway accounted for a number of professional eSports players lower to its Nordic neighbors. The number of players per million inhabitants amounted to 36 in the year 2016.
ESports, often associated with video games, refers to competing using electronic systems. Popular eSports games include League of Legends and Dota 2. ESports is increasing in popularity in the Nordics, which is reflected in the growth in the number of professional players and further in the total winnings earned in eSports.
