Between 2005 and 2010, natural gas consumption in the Netherlands increased to 46.8 billion cubic meters. This was the highest consumption rate during the displayed period. Demand decreased in the following years and amounted to 25.8 billion cubic meters in 2023.
Production declining
Natural gas production has seen an overall decline since 2006. In 2013, output had increased to 72.4 billion cubic meters but decreased annually in the following years. By 2021, the production of natural gas in the Netherlands was 25 percent of that produced in 2013. Throughout Europe, the Netherlands is behind Norway, the United Kingdom and Ukraine in terms of production.
Groningen Field
The Groningen gas field located in the north east of the Netherlands is one of the largest naturals gas reserves in the world. However, thousands of homes in the province have been damaged due to earthquakes caused by extraction. In 2014, the government decided to cut output from the field in half by 2022, with a target of zero extraction planned in the future.
Natural gas consumption in the Netherlands from 2005 to 2023
(in billion cubic meters)
This report was previously published by BP.
Figures exclude natural gas converted to liquid fuels. Derivatives of natural gas and coal consumed in gas-to-liquids transformation are included.
According to the source, this data represents standard cubic meters (measured at 15°C and 1,013 mbar) where possible. Since the figures were derived directly from tons of oil equivalent using an average conversion factor, it does not necessarily equate with gas volumes expressed in specific national terms.
This statistic was compiled using several releases of the publication.
