Natural gas consumption in France 2005-2023

 After having peaked at 49.6 billion cubic meters in 2010, the French consumption of natural gas has been regularly fluctuating up and down between 33 and 44 billion cubic meters. In 2023, figures reached 33.9 billion cubic meters.

The French multinational energy group ENGIE operates in the field of electricity production from non-oil sources and produces mainly natural gas-based electricity. For the year 2021, the power generation capacity of ENGIE from natural gas represented nearly 50 percent of the total installed generation capacity of the group.    

Renewable energies and environmental expectations among French

Primary energy consumption from renewable energies in France increased to 740 petajoules, while the consumption of oil-based energy fell to 2.9 exajoules by 2021. Among renewable energy sources, the solar photovoltaic power production in France has been raising significantly since the fourth quarter of 2010, reaching 9.8 gigawatt by the fourth quarter of 2020 – which represented an increase of nearly nine gigawatts within that timeframe. In addition to this production increase, solar power was the energy source that more than 80 percent of French respondents wished the most to be developed further in the upcoming years, according to a survey from 2018.
