Share of obese adult men in rural and urban India 2016

This statistic presents the results of a survey among households across rural and urban India about the share of overweight and obese men in 2016. In urban households, the share of overweight men was higher at 26.3 percent, while in rural areas, it was about 14.3 percent. This was an increase from 2005-06, when the total share of obese adult men was about 9.3 percent.

*According to the source, these are men between 15 and 49 years old whose BMI was more than or equal to 25 kilograms per meter square.
Body mass index is body mass divided by the square of the body height, and is universally expressed in units of kilograms per meter square. Commonly accepted BMI ranges are underweight: under 18.5 kg/m2, normal weight: 18.5 to 25, overweight: 25 to 30, obese: over 30.
