Share of approved films in France 2006-2015, by director’s gender

This statistic shows a distribution of approved films in France from 2006 to 2015, broken down by director’s gender. In 2015, 77.3 percent of films approved in France were directed by men, while 21 percent of films were directed by women. The total number of feature films produced in France in 2015, including those that were minority co-produced, was 300. In 2006, the share of films made by women was 17.2 percent. During the period in consideration, the number of films by female directors grew by 80 percent, while the number of approved films by men in the same time increased by 42.3 percent. The overall number of films produced by women between 2006 and 2015 was 506. This constitutes roughly 20 percent of all films produced in France during this period of time. Generally, over the whole decade, the share of films produced by women ranged between 17 percent and 22 percent, with the lowest level being 17.2 percent in 2006 and the highest level being 21.2 percent in 2013. The greatest rise in the share of films directed by women was in 2007 on 2006, with an increase of 3.9 percent.
