Throughout the period from 2013 to 2018, the main energy source for the Italian railway company Trenord was electricity. The electricity consumption peaked in 2016 at about 2.9 million gigajoules. By 2018, it had decreased to about two million gigajoules. Trenord S.r.l. employs over 4,000 people and it is the only company in Italy dealing exclusively with public transport within a single region, Lombardy.
