Legal cigarettes contributed a share of 80 percent of the tax revenue collected by the sale of tobacco products across India during fiscal year 2020. Cigarette prices increased in fiscal year 2019 and 2020 following a proposed tax hike on cigarettes by the central government in its economic survey for fiscal year 2020.
