Number of restaurants in Sweden 2008-2019
In Sweden, the number of enterprises in the restaurant industry increased constantly in the past years. In 2019, there were over 26 thousand enterprises registered. The growing number of companies in this industry included also a growing number of employees. Swedish restaurants had approximately 101.9 thousand employees as of 2019.
Regional distribution
As of 2017, most restaurants were in Stockholm, Sweden’s capital, reaching a number of roughly 3.3 thousand. In this year, in Gothenburg, there were more than 1.6 thousand restaurants located. Compared to Malmö, the third-largest Swedish city had around 700 restaurants more.
Favorite restaurant types
According to a survey conducted in Sweden in 2018 on favorite ethnic restaurant types, 89 percent of Swedes seemed to like Italian restaurants best. Thai food was popular too, with 80 percent of respondents stating to love eating there. Additionally, Greek, Mexican and Chinese restaurants were among the top five restaurant types.
