In financial year 2022, the major ports in India had no overseas passengers traffic, reflecting a dramatic decrease from nearly 230 thousand in 2020 as a result of travel bans and restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The country had a coastline of over 7,500 kilometers and the maritime transport handled more than two-third trade of the country by value.

India's financial year begins in April and ends in March. For example, FY 2008 started in April 2007 and ended in March 2008.
Major ports are under the union list while the non-major ports are under the concurrent list of the constitution of India. Therefore, major ports are under the administrative control of government of India while the non-major ports are governed by the respective maritime state governments.
