Mobile video is gaining relevance
Amongst all generations, accessing online video through smartphone instead of desktop devices is increasing. Since 2015, the penetration rate of videos viewed online on a smartphone has steadily increased with Generation X, with the usage rate standing at 32 percent for people aged between 37 and 56 880639 during the most recently measured period. For Generation Z, people between the ages of 14 and 22, the penetration rate stood up at 75 percent.
YouTube usage across generations
With a total of over nine million users in 2021, the number of registered users on YouTube in the Netherlands still continues to increase. A March 2020 survey found that approximately 67 percent of YouTube users in the Netherlands accessed the platform to watch music videos. In total, 67 percent of Generation X online users utilized the platform for this purpose.
YouTube was the third-most popular social media platform of Dutch Gen X, or 40-to-64-year olds, in 2020, losing out to Facebook and WhatsApp in terms of popularity.
