This statistic shows the answers to a survey question about the frequency of alternative currency transactions in the Netherlands in 2017. In early 2017, approximately five percent of the respondents indicated they rarely used alternative currency transactions. Bitcoin is a so-called cryptocurrency, a digital currency that uses blockchain technology as a means of security. In a survey conducted in the Netherlands on the familiarity with alternative digital currencies at the beginning of 2017, approximately 46 percent of the respondents indicated they heard about it but do not know much about it. Because of its design, however, it is difficult to get an insight in the complete size of the Bitcoin market in individual countries. In the first three quarters of 2017, there were approximately 44,000 trading transactions in Bitcoin in the Netherlands.
