Between January and December 2018, the largest number of unaccompanied and separated children who arrived in Italy by sea originated from Tunisia. Specifically, 940 Tunisian children reached Italian shores without their parents, representing 95 percent of all children arrived from this country. Additionally, Eritrea was the second most common nationality of unaccompanied and separated children (633 minors).
According to the source, separated children are those separated from both their parents, for instance due to conflicts or other disasters. Unaccompanied children are infants separated from both parents or other relatives, which are by law responsible for taking care of them.
