In financial year 2023, food grains traffic across major Indian ports amounted to over six million metric tons. There was a decrease in the volume by over one percent, in comparison to the previous financial year. Almost 70 percent of the country's trading value was handled through maritime transport.

India's financial year begins in April and ends in March. For example, FY 2004 started in April 2003 and ended in March 2004.

Major ports are under the union list while the non-major ports are under the concurrent list of the constitution of India. Therefore, major ports are under the administrative control of government of India while the non-major ports are governed by the respective maritime state governments.
