In the financial year 2022, the iron ore traffic across major Indian ports amounted to more than 52 million metric tons. Year-over-year, this volume decreased by more than 18 percent in that year. Almost 70 percent of the country's trading value was handled through maritime transport.

India's financial year begins in April and ends in March. For example, FY 2004 started in April 2003 and ended in March 2004.

Major ports are under the union list while the non-major ports are under the concurrent list of the constitution of India. Therefore, major ports are under the administrative control of government of India while the non-major ports are governed by the respective maritime state governments.
