India: total cargo volume handled by major port 2023

At the end of the fiscal year 2023, the total volume of cargo handled at the Deendayal port in India was more than 137 million metric tons. In comparison to the previous year, there was an increase in the cargo volume handled by this port. In total , major ports across India handled more than 784 million metric tons of cargo the same year.

Sea transport

India has a long and winding coastline that stretches for thousands of kilometers. The country operates one of the biggest merchant shipping fleets in the world and has one of the biggest container port traffic in the world. Since fiscal year 2011, the volume of cargo handled in Indian ports steadily increased until the breakout of the coronavirus pandemic. However, in comparison with other large countries, port infrastructure remains underdeveloped. Out of 229 ports in India, 12 are considered major ports.

Deendayal Port

Deendayal Port, also known as Kandla Port, is a seaport located in Gujarat, India, built in the 1950s.Lying on the western coast, facing the Arabian Sea, it serves as the main seaport of western India, alongside the port of Mumbai in Maharashtra. Both Maharashtra and Gujarat are among some of the more economically developed states of the country. The most common products handled in major ports were petroleum products, and coal.
