In Sweden, the annual household expenditure on meat increased in recent years. In 2016, the household spending on meat amounted to roughly 42 billion Swedish kronor. As of this year, a volume of more than 33 kilograms per capita of pork was consumed. By comparison, beef consumption reached a volume of nearly 26 kilograms per person in Sweden, while consumption reached two kilograms for lamb meat.
Pork and beef consumption
During the period from 2007 to 2017, the consumption volume of fresh and frozen pork was in all years higher than the consumption volume of beef in Sweden. While the pork consumption volume fluctuated slightly in recent years, the volume of beef and veal consumed increased overall. According to preliminary figures for 2017, the volume of pork consumed amounted to nearly 145 thousand metric tons and the volume of beef consumed reached around 124 thousand metric tons.
Meat alternative
The result of a survey conducted in 2017 on attitudes to seafood as a meat alternative in Sweden showed that the majority of poultry buyers were convinced of seafood as a very good alternative for poultry meat. Among meat buyers in general, this share amounted to 34 percent. Most of the respondents who buy meat stated that seafood is quite a good alternative for it.
