The UK food delivery market was worth a total of 6.5 billion British pounds in 2017. Telephone orders made up the largest stand-alone segment of the market at 2.7 billion pounds. However, collectively, online food services, including the Just Eat app and branded pizza online (consisting of Domino’s, Papa John’s and Pizza Hut’s online delivery services), generated a higher market value.
Just Eat’s success UK takeaway market
In the United Kingdom, Just Eat is a major player in the takeaway market. The company acts as an intermediary between restaurants and consumers, providing an application for consumers to search for and order food online for delivery, filling a gap in the UK’s already established takeaway market. For independent takeaway outlets especially, the app provided an additional outsourced ordering channel that complimented their business.
Telephone vs. online ordering
Traditionally, takeaways are ordered via telephone, but digitalization and innovations in technology have put food delivery apps at the forefront of the market’s development. Users of online food delivery services are expected to continue growing, although telephone orders are still far from becoming obsolete. Not all services operate in every location and some consumers are conscious of spending were they to start using them.
