In October 2024, 125 people were reported as either dead or missing after attempting to migrate across the Mediterranean sea, compared with 83 people in the same month of 2023. The Summer of 2023 saw the biggest spike in deaths or disappearances while crossing the Mediterranean since 2016, with 831 people being declared either dead or missing while crossing the sea in June.
