In 2016, the consumer expenditure on social games for conventional mobile phones in Japan amounted to about 9 billion Japanese yen, down from about 17 billion Japanese yen in the previous year. While consumer spending for social games on conventional mobile phones sharply decreased since its peak in 2011, the size of the smartphone game market increased more than twentyfour-fold in the same time period, reaching about 1.18 trillion Japanese yen in 2016.
