In 1999 30 percent of people thought it was just a part of war. By 2016, that figure had risen to 34 percent.

The 16 countries included in the survey were: Afghanistan, China, Colombia, France, Iraq, Israel, Nigeria, Palestine, Russia, South Sudan, Switzerland, Syria (Syrians in Lebanon), Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, Yemen.
Survey sizes varied by country from 800-5000 people.
