A niche market getting bigger
Although being a market segment in Italy, the sales value of graphic novels, comics and manga in Italy increased significantly to 13.5 million euros as of 2017. The increasing trend was seen among small publishers too. The sales value of graphic novels released by small publishing houses went from 5.1 million euros in 2016 to 6.1 million euros in 2018. The growth of manga’s sales value was even greater and reached 1.4 million euros as of November 2018.
A greater offer
The Italian market of graphic novels saw publications from outside the country. Between 2012 and 2017, the number of graphic novels created by foreign authors almost doubled. 2,702 works were available in 2012, five years later they were 4,145.
Back in 2016, comics and graphic novels were not a popular reading among Italian teenagers. In a survey, 59 percent of the respondents admitted not to like them, while another 12 percent would have read only Disney comics.
