U.S. paint and coatings demand by market 2009-2019

In 2019, the paint and coatings demand in the United States is projected to amount to 1.4 billion gallons. Architectural demand is expected to account for the largest share of U.S. demand at 59 percent. In North America as a whole, architectural paints only accounted for 24 percent of demand in 2016, by comparison.

U.S. paint and coatings companies

Several of the world’s leading paints and coatings companies are from the United States. This includes Sherwin-Williams, which operates more than 4,000 paint stores in the U.S., as well as nearly 700 paint stores in other countries worldwide. Based on revenue in 2018, Sherwin-Williams was the world’s largest paint and coatings company. PPG Industries is also a U.S.-based paint and coatings company and was ranked the second largest company in this industry in 2018, with a revenue of more than 15 billion U.S. dollars. In fifth, sixth, and seventh place, respectively in this ranking, are also U.S. companies RPM International Inc, Axalta, and Diamond Paints.
