As of 2017, 90 percent of Singaporeans stated that they preferred watching television shows or movies in the comfort of their own home. With the increasing affordability and availability of integrated televisions that can screen both internet video streaming and free-to-air channels, the number of Singaporeans preferring to watch TV shows and movies at home would likely remain high in the upcoming years.
Video-on-demand streaming services such as Netflix are posing a threat to the cinema industry in Singapore, as they offer a plethora of international television shows and movies for a monthly fee that is comparable to the price of a movie ticket. Such streaming services also offer the consumer the ability to watch videos anywhere, be it on their smartphone during their commute to work, or at home on the sofa or even in bed. Unsurprisingly, this has already had a negative impact on cinema viewership, while the number of Netflix subscribers in Singapore was predicted to increase in the next few years.
Singapore has the infrastructure in place for video-on-demand streaming services to take root. With a high television ownership and consistent growth in demand for household audio and video electronics, as well as the high cost of going out, staying home to enjoy quality entertainment would be an attractive alternative.
