Rail passenger numbers
Overall rail passenger numbers in Italy had been on an upward trend between 2012 and 2019 before plummeting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Passenger numbers dopped by over 60 percent between 2019 and 2020 only recovering slightly in 2021.
Number of trains by region
Considering figures regarding the number of trains , it can be observed that the Italian region of Lombardy was the region with the highest number of trains in use (521), followed by Campania (245). The regions with the lowest number of trains in use were Molise (22) and the Aosta valley region (10).
