Municipal waste generated in Italy 2022, by region
Lombardy is the Italian region generating the highest amount of waste. In 2022, the total volume of municipal waste produced in this region amounted to 4.6 million tons. Lazio and Emilia-Romagna followed far behind, both with roughly 2.8 million tons of waste.
Paper waste production and management
Lombardy is also the region with the greatest volume of paper waste collected, followed by the region of Emilia-Romagna. However, while Lombardy had the highest number of facilities intended for managing and processing paper waste in Italy at almost 40, Emilia-Romagna only had 20. Lombardy is by far the Italian region with the largest population.
Landfills and incineration
In 2022, there was still a gap between the South and the rest of Italy regarding the amount of waste sent to landfills for disposal. Indeed, in the North of Italy, landfills were deployed to get rid of roughly 1.4 million tons of waste against over two million tons in the South. The Northern region of Lombardy recorded the highest volume of waste incinerated nationwide.
