Illegal marriages in India among women below 18 years of age belonging to the lowest wealth index amounted to about 45 percent, while for men below 21 years old within the same wealth index, it was close to 30 percent.

The wealth index in this survey was constructed using data on household possession of assets, infrastructure and housing characteristics collected in the household questionnaire.
Note: The legal age for marriage in India is 18 years for women and 21 years for men, although there are exceptions under the Muslim and Hindu Marriage Act respectively.
