Largest banks in Belgium 2024, by number of branches
As of January 2024, Belfius topped the ranking that measured the total number of bank branches among banks in Belgium. The bank had 459 locations in the country. Crelan and KBC (In French, known as CBC) completed the top three, having 447 and 408 locations, respectively. The high number of bank offices is a particular trait of banking in Belgium. The number of local branches of the leading banks in the Netherlands, for instance, is much lower.
Bank branches by region
The number of bank branches in Belgium differs greatly by region. In 2022, Flanders (the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium) had by far the highest number of bank branches, as two thirds of all bank offices in the country were located there. The Brussels Capital Region (the city of Brussels and its surrounding villages) had 205 bank branches, whereas Wallonia (Belgium’s southern, French-speaking region) had 898.
Online banking is catching up?
Online banking penetration in Belgium increased greatly across all generations in recent years. Almost 90 percent of the 25-to-44-year-olds used online banking in 2023, making them the most active generation in this regard.
