Top 20 retail chains in Belgium 2020, by number of stores
Discount supermarkets in Belgium
In the last decade, the number of discount supermarkets in Belgium increased, peaking in 2011 at 741 stores, before decreasing again slightly. In 2016, there were 737 discount supermarkets in the country, with the majority belonging to the ALDI chain. In the same period, the market share of hard discounters also grew, from 14 percent in 2006 to 15.4 in 2016.
Aldi in the Netherlands
ALDI’s expansion abroad is certainly not limited to Belgium. To the north of Belgium, there were nearly 500 ALDI stores in the Netherlands. After peaking in 2016 at 507 stores, in 2017 the number of ALDI supermarkets decreased quite significantly, to just over 490. Despite this temporary setback, this number still meant a ninth place in the ranking of leading retailers in the Netherlands.
