In 2022, there were 823 companies operating in the biotechnology sector in Italy. This statistic breaks this figure down by field of application of biotechnologies. Data show that 49 percent of biotech companies operated in the sector of human health, while 29 percent of companies were active in the sector of industrial and environmental biotechnology. The former, moreover, generated almost three quarters of the total revenue of this industry in 2021.
