Owner-occupied dwellings accounted for the majority of housing units in Japan in 2023. Rented dwelling units amounted to 19.46 million, with the number of privately rented dwelling units reaching close to 15.7 million. There were more than 65 million dwellings in Japan in 2023, over 55 million of which were occupied.
