This statistic shows the results of a survey of Arab youth from the Middle East and North Africa on the change in the relations between Sunnis and Shia muslims during the past five years as of February 2016. A 24 percent share of the respondents stated that they consider that the relationship between Sunnis and Shias has stayed about the same in the past five years.
How do you rate the development of Sunni-Shia relationship since the past five years?* **
* The phrasing of this survey question as it appears in the report is as follows: "Compared to five years ago, would you say Sunni-Shia relationships have...?”.
** Sunni: major confession in Islam, Shia: confessional minority within Islam.
The countries covered by this survey were Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia, and Yemen.
The survey did not include Syria due to the ongoing civil war there.
Respondents were exclusevly comprised of citizens of the countries outlined above, with 50% male and 50% female respondents.
The margin of error for this survey is +/-1.65 per cent.
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates had 300 respondents. Iraq had 250 respondents and Palestine had 150. Each remaining country had 200 respondents.
The majorty of respondents were from urban areas.
