Market share forecast of new fully electric cars in the Netherlands 2015-2025

By 2020, the Dutch government aims for an electric passenger car market share of ten percent, whereas by 2030 a goal is set that all new sold passenger cars should have zero-emission. It is forecast that by 2020 the government will reach the intended ten percent and by 2025, 25 percent of all passenger cars will be fully electric. Looking at the electric passenger cars market share of both Battery Electric Vehicles and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (BEV and PHEV), the set goal of ten percent was nearly reached in 2015, but in the following years the share of electric passenger cars decreased significantly. However, by 2018 it increased again to 6.5 percent.

Registrations electric vehicles

The number of newly registered electric passenger cars grew steadily between 2010 and 2016 in the Netherlands, before increasing significantly in 2017. In 2010, 122 electric passenger cars were registered, whereas by 2017 it increased to a total of 7,985 passenger cars with an electric engine. Looking at the total fleet of electric passengers' cars categorized by PHEV and BEV, over 97,000 Plug-in Hybrids were to be found in the Netherlands in 2018, whereas the total fleet of fully electric passenger cars amounted to 45,000.

Leading fully electric passenger cars

As of June 2019, approximately 12,600 Tesla Model S cars were registered in the Netherlands, which made the car the leading fully electric passenger car. Nissan had with their Leaf model roughly 6,900 registrations in the Netherlands, whereas the Tesla Model 3 was registered 6,065 times.
