Average expenditure on eating out in the Netherlands 2016, by age

The statistic illustrates the average expenditure on eating out in the Netherlands in 2016, by age (in euros per meal). As of 2016, the age group 71 years and older spent on average 29.29 euros per meal when eating out. However, it is the middle aged generation who spent the most on eating out. The age group 37 to 50 years old spent on average approximately 33 euros per meal, whereas the 51 to 70 years spent roughly 31 euros a meal.
Looking at the percentage that dine outdoors at least once a week, a slight increase from 2009 to 2016 can be seen. Where in 2009 roughly 15 percent mentioned to dine outdoors, in 2016 this was roughly 20 percent. The increase in dining out reflects the increasing revenue index of the restaurant industry. In the first quarter of 2015, the revenue index was 84.6.4 (index 2015=100). In the same quarter in 2019, this index was 108.6, indicating an increase in revenue of roughly 20 percent.
