International tourism balance of payments in Japan 2005-2023
In 2023, the international tourism balance of payments of Japan amounted to around 3.4 trillion Japanese yen, increasing by nearly three trillion yen compared to the previous year. From 2015 onwards, Japan had a positive international tourism balance. This trend also continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. After travel restrictions were cleared in April 2023, inbound tourism inflow grew strong, leading to the largest tourism balance surplus hitherto recorded in Japan.
