Leading BEV models in the car fleet in the Netherlands July 2024
As of July 2024, Tesla's Model 3 was the leading all-electric passenger car based on the number of vehicles in the Dutch battery-electric passenger car fleet. As more individuals become more climate-conscious, the demand for more sustainable cars continues to grow. In the Netherlands, the electric passenger car sector has shown strong signs of growth in the last years. The number of new electric passenger car registrations soared from 9,000 units in 2017 to over 160,900 units in 2023.
Electric passenger car options
Among the newly registered fully electric passenger cars in the Netherlands, Tesla’s Model 3 was by far the leading electric car with nearly 49,500 cars registered as of July 2024. Kia's Niro was the third most common battery electric car on Dutch roads with over 27,200 cars.
Types of electric passenger cars
Since 2017, the number of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) on the road in the Netherlands has increased significantly rising to nearly 435,600 vehicles compared to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), which have been left behind at only about 262,200 vehicles in the fleet. This has been a result of infrastructure and efficiency improvements of the BEV option.
