Leading airports worldwide 2022, by share of on-time departures

In 2022, Japan’s Haneda airport was ranked the best-performing airport worldwide, with over 90 percent of on-time departures. The Bangalore-based Kempegowda International Airport followed, recording around 84 percent of on-time departures.

Airports 4.0

Keeping up with new technologies, the aviation industry is moving towards creating full digital airports, also known as Airports 4.0. The coronavirus pandemic accelerated this phenomenon, with several technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), contributing to more efficient terminal management. For instance, online booking, online check-in, and self-service bad drops are becoming more common in airports around the world.

Digitalization of the tourism industry

The tourism industry includes various products, such as accommodation, transport, attractions, and travel companies. As for airports, the global tourism industry is also shifting towards digitalization. A direct consequence is the growth of the online travel markets, which includes online travel agencies (OTAs) allowing tourists to book travel services online, like Booking.com, and online review websites, like Tripadvisor.
