Leading German tour operators 2017-2019, by revenue

TUI was Germany’s most successful tour operator in 2019, generating over 7.3 billion euros worth of revenue that year. Other leading companies included Thomas Cook and DER Touristik.

What’s a tour operator?

A tour operator is a travel agency, or agent, who focuses on selling package deals to holidaymakers. In comparison, a travel agency as such might have a broader range of services and can also assist in bookings related to business travel. The TUI Group is a German company and one of the leading tour operators in the world. In addition to travel agencies, it also owns airlines, hotels and cruise ships. Specifically, TUI Deutschland covers the travel agency division of the group. Tour operator revenue in Germany has been growing steadily during recent years.

Optimistic prognosis

The German tourism industry in general is experiencing stable growth, and the same can be said for the tour operator segment. Not just revenue figures confirm the latter, but so do growing employee numbers. After a slump during the last five years, revenue from tour operator services in Germany is expected to rise bit by bit in the 2020s.
