MENA tourism trends
Six percent of the total worldwide tourism in 2018 was in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). There are various tourism types offered in the MENA region including business, leisure, and cultural tourism. Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had the highest international receipts value of more than 21 billion U.S. dollars in 2018. It is famous for luxury shopping malls and world-class man-made attractions such as Burj Khalifa. Morocco was leading among the region in terms of wellness tourism in 2015 at 2.5 million visitors. The most well-known online travel company in the region was booking.com in 2018.The COVID-19 pandemic that occurred in 2020 affected the tourism industry worldwide. The industry in the region also indirectly affected the businesses as more than 60 percent of the region’s business owners complained about the travel difficulty and restrictions imposed to limit the spread of the pandemic .
