Number of retail chains in Hungary 2023, by sector

In 2023, there were 122 retail chains in Hungary covering 19 different sectors, varying from books and magazines to fashion and consumer electronics. Fashion and clothing was the leading sector, with 32 chains out of the total of 122, followed by sports and leisure, with 16 retail chains. Consumer electronics ranked in third place, recording 14 retail chains.

Fashion and clothing retail in Hungary

In 2022, there were approximately 114 thousand retail shops in Hungary out of which 12 thousand were clothes retail stores. Even though clothing and fashion items are considered highly affordable in Hungary compared to other EU member states, in 2022, household spending on clothing amounted to 766 billion forints.

Hungarians still prefer in-person shopping

The findings of a survey conducted in 2021 reveald that the majority of Hungarians, especially women, favored in-person shopping over online purchases. Over 50 percent of men and approximately 64 percent of women stated that they preferred in-store shopping.
