As of January 2023, the largest number of retail chains belonged to the fashion and clothing industry in Russia. The food sector accounted for 26 chains, or around 14 percent of the country’s total in that period.
Russian apparel market
The size of the Russian apparel market fell to 22 billion U.S. dollars in 2022, having experienced an exodus of international brands in response to the invasion of Ukraine. In previous years, the development of e-commerce in the country led to a prominent growth of online trade in this segment. With Wildberries as an irreplaceable leader, the Russian e-commerce market is evolving at a fast pace.
Retail trade in times of coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic contributed to the unprecedented panic shopping of grocery products and household detergents in Russia. Online sales of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) grew exponentially during the lockdown. Traditional retail, however, manifested as one of the most vulnerable sectors in view of the pandemic.

The source includes retailers (chains) when they have a minimum of five stores or a minimum turnover of 3 million euros.
