Gender pay gap South Korea 2010-2022
In 2022, the women-to-men's earnings ratio in South Korea was approximately 65 percent. While this rate has increased in recent years, the gender pay gap is still evident in South Korean society today.
A difference in compensation?
South Korean women have increasingly joined the workforce in recent years. Despite the rise of the female labor force participation rate, it is still far below the average of the member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). In addition, the difference in pay between men and women is, unfortunately, a prevailing trend across all occupations.
A joint call for balance
The challenge of balancing childcare responsibilities with a career disproportionately affects working women. This is particularly true in South Korea, where a survey on women's equality has revealed that employers do not offer sufficient support to help women achieve a healthy work-life balance. One of the many obstacles that make it difficult for South Korean women to progress in their careers is the challenge of returning to work after an extended career break, such as maternity leave.
