Number of hotels in Belgium 2008-2019

As of 2019, Belgium had 2,111 hotels in total, which was 33 hotels more than the previous year. Furthermore, from 2014 onwards, the number of hotels grew annually, with the largest volume increase recorded between 2017 and 2018. Flanders had the highest count of hotels with more than a thousand hotels in 2019. Wallonia registered 429 hotels, whereas Brussels-Capital Region had in total approximately 195 hotels available.

Majority of the tourists booked a hotel accommodation

Comparing the number of arrivals in hotels to other accommodations in Belgium, most of the tourists stayed in hotel facilities in 2018. From the total of 17.5 million tourist arrivals, approximately 11.5 million chose to stay at hotels. Youth accommodations registered roughly 1.5 million arrivals, whereas holiday parks and holiday centers counted a little less with 1.45 million. The number of arrivals in bed and breakfasts was the lowest during that period.

Most of the tourist arrivals were domestic

When considering the country of origin of tourist arrivals in Belgium, a ranking for 2020 shows that most were domestic tourists. In fact, close to 4.6 million tourist arrivals across Belgium were domestic, whereas tourists from the Netherlands amounted to just 737. United States and China were the only non-European countries on the list, registering a combined arrival figures of just 86.7 thousand. The number of tourist arrivals to Belgium significantly declined in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
