This statistic shows the 25 U.S. cities with the highest rates of opioid abuse among those with an opioid prescription from 2011 to 2015. During this time, the city of Wilmington in North Caroline had the highest rate of opioid abuse, at over 11.6 percent.

For the purposes of this analysis, opioid abuse was defined as meeting the following two conditions: 1. Receiving greater than a cumulative 90-day supply of opioids; AND 2. Receiving an opioid prescription from four or more providers over the five-year period between 2011 and 2015.
