In 2022, China had approximately 179 million fixed telephone subscriptions, which was undoubtedly the highest number of telephone subscriptions throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Japan and India followed with around 60.7 and 27.5 million fixed telephone subscriptions, respectively.
Technological presence
Taking China’s 1.4 billion population into consideration, it is not surprising that it would have the highest number of fixed telephone subscriptions across the Asia-Pacific region. However, China has also forged a reputation as being one of the world’s most technologically innovative countries. South Korea also has a formidable telecommunications sector, with South Korean consumers expressing satisfaction with the country’s digital infrastructure.
The age of the mobile
As the Asia-Pacific region transforms into a digital hub, its telecommunications industry has undergone a distinct evolution. Instead of fixed line communications, mobile phones are being more widely used. China ranks as the country in the region with the highest number of mobile phone subscriptions. Japan also stands as a strong competitor in terms of its telecommunications industry, boasting three major telecom operators which have each earned over ten billion U.S dollars’ worth of revenue. Similar to China, Japan has developed its mobile market, especially its smartphone market, in which it has achieved high smartphone penetration rates.
