Number of egg production enterprises in Iceland 2011-2023

In Iceland, the number of egg production enterprises fluctuated in recent years but was always relatively low. In the period from 2013 to 2016, it was highest as there were nine egg production companies registered. As of 2020 to 2023, the number amounted to seven enterprises. From 2008 to 2018, the average producer price of eggs in Iceland increased strongly. It peaked at almost 463 thousand Icelandic krónur per metric ton in 2016 and declined to roughly 400 thousand Icelandic krónur per metric ton in the years that followed.   

Laying hens

The number of laying hens in Iceland fluctuated in the past years. In 2022, there were nearly 173 thousand laying hens in the island country. After a period of ten years, this figure peaked in 2018, amounting to approximately 254 thousand animals.

International trade with eggs

Compared with Iceland’s export of eggs, the import value was very high. The island country’s import value of eggs was around 818 million Icelandic kónur in 2022, while the export value amounted to only 2.5 million Icelandic krónur
