Amphetamine use on the rise
According to a survey conducted since 1997, the use of amphetamine more than doubled in the last 20 years. Where in 1997, 2.2 percent of respondents stated to have ever used amphetamine, by 2021 this had grown to 5.3 percent. The share of regular users, defined by the source as respondents who have used amphetamine in the last month, increased fourfold in this period.
Amphetamine most popular among the young
Amphetamine was most popular among the younger generation. Of the 20-24 year olds, rouhly nine percent had experience using the drug. Among the 25 to 29 year olds this was even higher, at 13.6 percent. By comparison, of the respondents older than 65 years, only 1.7 percent had ever tried amphetamine. Regular amphetamine use was highest among the 25 to 29 year olds. In this age group, more than four percent had used the drug in the past month.
The average price of amphetamine in the Netherlands was relatively stable in the last decade, peaking in 2012 at nine euros per gram. In 2008, a gram was sold for six euros on average.
