Leading hotel groups in Europe 2016, by number of rooms
Accor & FRHI became the biggest hotel group operating in Europe according to the number of hotel rooms in 2016. In total, the group had just under 277 thousand hotel rooms in Europe at the start of the year. Accor also ranks as the leading hotel group based on the number of hotels in European Union countries.
Hotel mergers and acquisitions
Since 2014, there has been a significant number of M&A deals across the global hotel industry. The Accor hotel group, owner of brands including Ibis, Novotel and Mecure, acquired FRHI, which owns the Fairmont, Raffles and Swissôtel brands, in 2016, resulting in an expansion into the luxury hotel segment. Marriott international also announced it would be acquiring Starwood Hotels and Resorts in 2015, with the deal finalized in September 2016. The number of Marriott hotel rooms has since increased worldwide.
